CATS Musical Movie Night
Love it or hate it, CATS is the fourth longest-running musical on Broadway and got a lot of talk last year when it was turned into a star-studded feature film with celebs like Taylor Swift, James Corden, Jason Derulo, and Judy Dench all coming out to be cats. I saw the musical for the first time the summer of 2019 in preparation for the 2019 film. I knew beforehand a lot of people hated it and thought it was weird, but that’s all I knew about it so I gave it a shot. It was weird, but it is actually really enjoyable I think! There is practically no story line but it is based off of a book of poetry by T.S. Eliot called Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. So if you can accept that each cat is a poem and each poem has been turned into a song, the music is really fun. So the 2019 movie is already out on digital and comes out on DVD this month. So I’ve put together a fun cat-filled movie night bar cart which would be fun whether you’re watching the movie, headed to a live performance, or need some fun ideas for any dog or cat-themed party. Scroll on for all the fun details!
Our cats are active at night so I put up this really fun starry backdrop. It’s a roll of wrapping paper I grabbed at Target a couple of years ago and it is the prettiest backdrop! The way all the stars sparkle when the light hits is something else. I’ve also hung our very own Jellicle Moon (which is just a white paper lantern with fairy lights inside). It’ll look amazing when the lights go down!
Good parties have good food! We have a cheese board with an assortment of crackers, salami, Goldfish, and mice made from Laughing Cow cheese wedges and mini pepperoni. Below there are cat-shaped peanut butter cookies served with milk, of course! Depending on your crowd you could serve fish sticks, sushi, and Swedish Fish! And we’ll be eating our snacks out of actual cat dishes! I found these cute cat bowls at Marshalls for $2.99 each. It’s a fun detail, and if you’ve got a big crowd, you can get plastic ones at Walmart for very little.
The milk bottles are hands down my favorite detail! I made drink “charms” using actual collars and printing the names of some of our favorite cats on paper and attaching with wire. These would be so fun for any dog or cat party and I can’t wait to use them again in the future! I purchased the collars at Walmart in the dog section. They are the XS size and were only $1.78 a piece! The drink coasters are the poems that I photocopied in and punched out. The poem corresponds to the cat on the name tag—it’s all about the details!
Thank you for visiting! So let’s talk CATS in the comments—love it? Hate it? Refuse to see it? And let me know if you’ve got a favorite cat! I love Skimbleshanks but my best friend and I are definitely the tag-teaming Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer :)
